The main attraction of Riviera is the Vittoriale degli Italiani where Gabriele d’Annunzio lived until his death in 1938. The reconstruction works began in 1921 under the direction of Giancarlo Maroni, after the poet bought the 18th century Cargnacco Villa to transform it into his residence.
The Vittoriale includes a large park with several fountains, the auditorium displaying the aeroplane used by D’Annunzio for the flight over Vienna in 1918, the living quarters called Prioress, the mausoleum where the poet is buried, and the prow of the ship Puglia embedded in the side of the mountain.
